20 Aug Cape Breton’s First Dancing With The Stars for Hospice Competition
The Cape Breton community is invited to get their glitz and glam on for a wonderful evening of music, dance and fundraising on Saturday, October 5, when eight pairs of community leaders and talented dancing pros will take to the stage to show off their dance moves for Hospice. Rehearsals are well underway and fundraising has begun as each “star” has committed to a personal fundraising goal to support the community’s new Hospice Residence.
“Dancing with the Stars is a fun, fresh fundraising event that promises to be a night to remember,” says Patricia Jackson, Co-chair Hospice Palliative Care society. “We’re thrilled to be bringing this exciting event to Cape Breton and looking forward to raising funds for a much-needed community resource,” adds Irene Khattar, Co-chair Hospice Palliative Care Society. “Our local celebrities and our local talent have truly stepped up for a worthy cause and we’d like to invite the Cape Breton community to join us in cheering them on along the way!”
The eight teams will each perform a different dance style in front of a panel of judges (yet to be revealed), as well as all who attend the event at Membertou Trade and Convention Centre. The dances are as diverse as the personalities who will be performing – from ballroom to tap, from tango to hip hop.
The pairs will be competing for the coveted Judges Award and also the People’s Choice Award, based on the number of votes. Votes can be cast on the Canada Helps website or at the event itself for $1 per vote. The pair with the most number of votes will take home the trophy and bragging rights that go with it, all with the knowledge that they have raised funds for the establishment of a much needed Hospice Residence.
Dance pairs include the following:
LeeAnn MacLeod-Archer and her dance partner pro Gurjinder Singh Saina will perform Bhangra
David Dingwall and his dance partner pro Cynthia Vokey who will be dancing a tap number
Chief Terry Paul and his dance partner pro Lucy Wintermans who will be dancing a musical theatre number
Kathleen Yurchesyn and her dance partner pro Chris Mkandawire who will be demonstrating the Tango.
Michele Bianchini and her dance partner pro Jake Nguyen who will be performing a robotic dance
Amanda McDougall and her dance partner pro Jason Han who will be dancing hip hop
Mandat Maharaj and his dance partner pro Han Yiyang (Jessica) who will be dancing the salsa
Guy LaFosse and his dance partner pro Denise Jardine who will be dancing a jazz number
The pros bring great experience, talent and technical skills to the floor with both stars and pros generously donating countless hours of preparation for this very special red carpet event.
