In May, join folks across the country in a conversation about hospice palliative care. The theme of the annual event is, “The Power of 10: Let’s talk about hospice palliative care.” http://www.chpca.net/news-and-events/national-hospice-palliative-care-week.aspx People are encouraged to chat with at least ten other people — whether it be friends, co-workers or family members – about what palliative care is and its importance. The goal is to generate
dialogue about an essential service that has touched — and will continue to touch — many lives.
The more people discuss the services available and learn of the immense benefits of hospice palliative care, the enhanced quality of life for all. Locally, there’ll be lots of opportunity for the people of Cape Breton to learn more and be involved. There’ll be information booths set up throughout the community, along with a flag raising ceremony at the Civic Centre on Monday, May 4th. You’ll see hospice palliative care volunteers and staff in malls, banks and other retail outlets eager to share their first-hand experience and knowledge. All people should be aware of hospice palliative care. The services provided are invaluable and this week will shine a spotlight on that care and its benefits to patients and their family. Take part, talk together and allow the “The Power of 10” to strengthen
this essential dialogue.

The Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County is teaming up with local restaurants to bring Burger Week to the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. From October 31 to November 7, participating restaurants will feature a special Burger Week burger, with a portion of the sales from each burger sold during the week going toward the Hospice Palliative Care Society.
A total of 16 restaurants are participating, with many creating special burgers for the fundraiser while others have chosen delicious burgers that are already on their menus. The Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County provides comfort and compassionate care to individuals and their loved ones living with life-threatening illnesses. This includes everything from music therapy to home support items and meeting many special personal needs that enhance patients' quality of life.
“We are so very pleased with the level of support we've received from local restaurants for our Burger Week fundraiser,” says Patricia Jackson, Co-chair, Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County. “We are grateful for the involvement of participating returns and hope that the community will take advantage of a wide range of burger choices knowing that they are contributing to the needs of patients who face highly challenging health and family situations.”
Jackson adds that, “The participating restaurants have brought great imagination to their Burger Week creations. I think people are going to have a hard time choosing which burger to eat – luckily Burger Week is seven days so they can sample more than one throughout the week. I encourage everyone to get out and get eating in support of an important community organization.”
For more than 25 years, the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County has been assisting the Cape Breton District Health Authority Palliative Care Service meet the needs of palliative care patients and their families through the provision of volunteer support, staff education, comfort and care support items, the Music Therapy program, the Family Assistance Fund and bereavement support.
